La Manual Alpargatera was born in 1943 –just after the Civil War was over- as an espadrille workshop and was the first one to take this kind of footwear –until then associated with lower-class peasants- to the world of fashion. The facade of the establishment was soon to become a symbol of Barcelona and, even today, more than half a century later, still is.
Today, it is a must-see in all tourist routes through the city’s centre and, in fact, the brochure that tells its history is found in more than 40 languages. The shop-workshop has received several international awards and has served, throughout all its history, clients such as Salvador Dali, Ralph Lauren, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Michael Douglas or Penélope Cruz.
The space is divided into two: one is the workshop where espadrilles –comfortable organic footwear with great tradition, made with natural materials- are made, and the other is the store, where shoes and other items are exhibited and sold.
